Maritime Union Says Holes In Official Accounts Of Rena’s Seaworthiness
October 15, 2011 – 2:04 amThe Maritime Union has renewed calls for review reports on the Rena to be done open and for elaboration of what a Maritime New Zealand review involves.
Maritime Union of New Zealand General Secretary Joe Fleetwood says it is still misleading what sort of review was carried out on the Rena in Bluff by Maritime New Zealand on 28 September 2011.
“Was this Maritime New Zealand review a full review of all areas of regard that had been picked up in China or Australia, or was it simply a talk to the Master and acceptance of whatever he said? Let’s see the paperwork.”
Mr Fleetwood says countless problems with the Rena had been picked up in Australia and China over preceding months heading to the liner being detained. These had enclosed a few safety of navigation issues.
He says the actual situation is the power of liner operators and charterers, and unsound controls by ports and national nautical authorities.
“Masters are hold warrant to the final of the charterers and owners, that is where the actual shortcoming lies, but those at the tip are roughly untouchable.”
Mr Fleetwood says one area that had not been discussed so far is how the chaotic report of the Rena mission in to multi-part New Zealand ports in a partial window of time might have caused organisation fatigue.
“There is large pressure on crews forthcoming on from charterers and owners. Will charges be laid at the highest turn or will the organisation be done to be scapegoats whilst the big boys travel giveaway and the taxpayer carries the cost of the washed up?”
Mr Fleetwood says he is upset about the withdrawal of organisation members of the Rena from New Zealand.
He does not agree to on face worth the affirm that this is is to crews own safety, as New Zealand had a military force that as if was able to look after a few organisation members.
“Our experience in the fishing and nautical attention is that agents and charterers, behaving in unison with the authorities, are frequently in a outrageous precipitate to obtain crews out of the nation in identical situations to this.”
“We think this is mostly to do with minimizing the promotion and probability of authorised action. Is this other douse up going on here?”
Mr Fleetwood says the Filipino residents should have nothing to apprehension subsequent to the Rena disaster, after reports of concerns for their safety.
“I have never listened anything so dim-witted than New Zealanders who wish to censure Filipinos for this disaster. Most of the organisation on the liner have no manage over its navigation, and at this theatre the arrested officers have not been convicted of anything, let alone people who aren’t anything to do with the ship.”
Mr Fleetwood says if people longed for to opening their frustration, it should be done in a burly and forceful way at the present and past New Zealand Governments and authorities who have allowed inferior dwindle of ease of use vessels to ceaselessly traffic on the New Zealand coast.
